Are shock boots important?

I have a 2003 Wrangler that i am putting a 3 inch lift on, i have heard that shock boots do nothing but trap salt, moisture, etc in them. I live in northern Illinois so we get alot of snow and salt on our vehicles. Are these boots important or should i just throw them out and try to keep the shaft end of the shock clean. I dont do a whole lot of off-roading, mild trail riding but no mudding.

Are shock boots important?
I would throw them away if I were you, but its your choice. Shock boots do nothing, and like you said, they do trap dirt and other particles that in time can cause them to corrode and eventually fall apart. But like I said, its your choice. I don%26#039;t have them on mine, and I also have a 3%26quot; lift.
Reply:If they%26#039;re in good shape and zip tied at the ends then you should be good. I believe they are better for your shocks.
Reply:i keep them on and make sure they are not torn or loose.

old man emu doesn%26#039;t use boots, they have a metal shield. if i were not going to use boots i would go the ome route.

if you are worried about salt and corresion, try carwell.com

they have an underbody/body cavity spray that displaces moisture and prevents corresion.

if you are near the canadian border, it is called krown.com up there.

i use it on all my vehicles, 92 ford-no rust, 92 ford sedan no rust new rubicon- no rust

they use it on the salt trucks up north and the city buses.
Reply:If you want them to last its best to keep them on. Once they are torn you are correct they do just collect dirt, salt, and anything else that fits in there.
Reply:yes it stops DE nos wen you hit a bump or a hole
Reply:Toss them. You already have good info that you posted.
